Witsand

A small town 280 km east of Cape Town. It sits on Breed River mounth which runs out in the Indian Ocean. Witsand used to be a whaler town, but now that this is illegal, it´s become home one of the best whale watching sites in South Africa. The whales are here from June until November. Torill, Christian and I drove up there for a weekend trip, not to see the whales obviously since were are in January, but to kiteboard. I was in Witsand 3 years ago, so I knew the spot was excellent.

Lorraine from Barry´s Holiday Accommodation sorted us out with big house, for a bargain of a price. A really nice house overlooking Breed River in the west. The house even had a 2nd floor with Pool table and Ping Pong, we were all set for the weekend.

Saturday the wind was light, but since there a tide causing a quite significant current in the opposite direction of the wind, we were able to get a 2 hour session.

Sunday had the best forecast, and what a day! Already before lunch the wind was hammering, almost two much for my 9m2 kite. The wind was also gusty, making it quite difficult to practice tricks. After 3 hours on the water and bruised rib (I´m getting old), we decided to break for lunch. On my way from the beach up to the road where our car was parked, I jumpstarted my South African wildlife experience, running in to a Steenbok on the pathway. I stopped, he /she stopped, and we stood there watching each other for 2-3 minutes. Nice experience, sadly I did not bring my camera. I was left with a picture of Lorraines parrot and I..

After lunch the wind cleaned up, creating almost perfect conditions. I´m still soar, today is Tuesday.
Hoping to loosen up running this afternoon.

Cape Point

On Tuesday, Håkon, Camilla and I traveled to Cape Point. The windforcast that day was not that good for Cape Town. The wind at Cape Point was gusty making the conditions quite rough. But, Håkon and I got 2 hours in the waves, so we were happy. The drive from Cape Town out to Cape Point offers quite a scenery, not to mention Cape Point Baboons, you can miss them. Sad thing is that people still feeds them, make theme quite aggressive. 2 females baboons watched us slip in to our wetsuits, just 2 meters away.

On Wednesday Torill and Christian arrived. They have been in Langebaan for week or so, not lucky with wind there either..Nice to have theme here. Fredrik Winter, also a kite friend from back home showed up at the beach yesterday. He is here with he´s family on maternity leave. Turns out Fredrik and his family are staying at the house in Cape Town where I stayed 3 years ago. Small world.

Torill, Christian and I have decided to travel to Witsand this weekend. This is 3,5 hours east towards Gorge. This is a really nice place, with superb conditions for kiteboarding. This spot is also very nice for photo shooting, .so I´m hoping to get some nice kite pics. The forecast is also good, crossing fingers..
